Local Government Association
The Local Government Association (LGA) plays an important role in the Sustainable Communities Act process. All proposals made
by councils go to the LGA. As there may be large numbers of proposals from councils, a prioritising process will be necessary. This is the job of the LGA as ‘the selector’ under the Act. It is very good that this will not be carried out by central government or Whitehall civil servants but by the representative body for councils. The government must co-operate with the LGA on this selection.
The government and the LGA then negotiate on which of the short list of proposals action will be taken on. Government must ‘reach agreement’ with the LGA on this, i.e. they can not simply reject proposals because they don’t like them or want to take any action on them.
Note: details of the selection and negotiation of the proposals will all be public.
